Grow Your Own Program

The Grow Your Own program encourages partnerships between PK-12 schools and educator preparation providers to create pathways for school support staff to attain initial teacher certification and for certified teachers to obtain additional endorsements in areas of high need. The Grow Your Own program and strategic plan supports teacher collaborative and mentorship efforts, offering comprehensive resources and funding.

Things to Know

  • Fully funded by the grant (includes books).
  • Program designed for working professionals.
  • Three year commitment to Kentwood Public Schools upon completion.

How to Apply

Interested in the Grown Your Own (GYO) Program? Follow these steps:

  • Complete the GYO application in Frontline Central
  • Apply to Davenport University or Western Michigan University 
  • OR apply to the West Michigan Teacher Collaborative

Davenport University 

Alternative Route to Teacher Certificate Program for individuals with a Bachelor’s degree seeking initial certification  (22 credits) or Master’s degree (18 additional credits).

Programs Offered:

  • Secondary Science (DI)
  • Secondary Math (EX) 
  • Secondary ELA (BA)
  • Elementary Education

Applications: Rolling Admissions

Western Michigan University

  • Accelerated Bachelor’s degree: 2-3 years
  • Accelerated Master’s degree:  1-2 years
  • Eligible for Michigan Teacher Certification upon completion

Programs Offered:

  • Early Childhood Special Education
  • Elementary Education
  • Special Education (Autism, Emotional Impairments, Learning Disabilities and Cognitive Impairments) 
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

West Michigan Teacher Collaborative 

A grant funded partnership between Grand Valley State University and three ISD’s.

  • Pre-Residency Program: For those with 30 college credits but no Bachelor’s degree.
  • Residency Program: For individuals with a Bachelor’s degree seeking initial certification.
  • Endorsements & Advanced Degrees Program: For current teachers seeking advanced endorsements/graduate degrees.
