East Kentwood helps knock off perennial champ, finishes runner-up at state finals
Jane Bos | The Grand Rapids Press, March 06, 2010 11:24 p.m. GRAND RAPIDS -- Competitive cheer is a weirdly cool juxtaposition of makeup and sweat, of frilly head bows and heavy lifting, of squealing and loud shouting. It's one of those sports -- and clearly, it is a sport -- that you might need to see to understand. On Saturday, the nearly 3,000 ear-piercingly loud fans gathered at DeltaPlex for the Division 1 state championships watched eight talented teams, comprised of 16 girls each, vie for the right to be No. 1 in three rounds of extremely athletic competition. They did synchronized leaps, splits and back flips. They tossed each other in the air while chanting. They clapped for each other and got the crowd involved. At the end, after the final mount settled and the last scream evaporated, the upset happened. Rochester Stoney Creek and East Kentwood did the nearly unthinkable, unseating perennial state champion Rochester for the top two spots. Read the full article at Mlive.com

March 04, 2010, 11:00AM Name: Daniel Edward Schinnerer Age now: 31 High school sports: Swimming and water polo at East Kentwood Years: 1993-97 Why we remember him: Schinnerer, a three-time conference champion for the Falcons, won the Class A state title in the 500-yard freestyle (4:32.22) as a senior in 1997.
